My older daughter has been able to write her name for the last year, however, what I didn't think of was that she writes it in all Capital Letters! Which is age appropriate, but I never thought about it. When I did student teaching, I taught in the primary grades but never younger than first grade, so by the time the kids were in my class they already wrote fairly well. Some minor writing technique had to be worked on, and some letters were still reversed, but basically all the children had some writing technique in place.
I was actually surprised last night when I sat down with my older daughter, that is only four, and how frustrated and stressed she became about lower case letters! Her teacher is not putting pressure on them, but wants them to practice.
For some reason I thought she was just going to get it in the proper lines! My expectations were crazy high for her, and I had her at a First Grade level at only four.
Yup I am totally naive. I became frustrated, she became frustrated. Totally different to teach your child than another child. Then I had my husband work with her, and he made me realize that this is all practice and that is why we are working with her. That she isn't going to get it right away. That this is a skill they work on for a few years and even my first graders weren't perfect at it.
He was right. She didn't do it perfectly, but she tried very hard and she started to get the concept of the lower case letters by the end of the practice homework. She still needs lots of work of understanding the lines, but this is definitely a step by step process and definitely a new skill.
This morning I decided to check out some things that I saw on the internet to see how I can work with her on writing and I found some great one's. I thought you might be interested in them too, if you are going through the same thing.
Some of the downloads are free and some are not, but it might be worth the few dollars for you.
